How to solo with a Spanish sound (Harmonic minor)
In this video, I show you every position of the harmonic minor scale on the first 12 frets.
The harmonic minor scale is the Natural minor scale with a natural 7th.
It can be used in a few different areas.
1. You are playing in the key of A minor. The chords are Am, Bdim, C, Dm, Em, F, G
If you turn the Em into an E major you should in theory now play Harmonic minor. So in short, when you turn the 5th chord of any minor key from a minor chord to a major chord you can now play in harmonic minor.
2. The harmonic minor scale also has its own 7 modes. The mode most commonly used is the Phrygian dominant mode. This is the 5th mode of harmonic minor. Usually associated with s Spanish or Eastern sounding scale. Let's say you are in the key of A harmonic minor. If you start in the 5th note (E) and continue to play the A harmonic minor scale a further 8 notes - you are now playing E Phrygian Dominant.
